Oil on the Lamp
The oil is Jesus by the Holy Spirit in you. You cannot have oil on your lamp, your life without the light Jesus in you.
Matt. ev. 1-13.
The parable of the ten virgins
v1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. V2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. V3 The foolish took their lamps, but took no oil. V4 The wise took their lamps, and oil in their vessels. V5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. V6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. V7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. V8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out. V9 But the wise answered, No, there is not enough for us and you. Go rather to the merchant and buy yourselves. V10 But while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding hall, and the door was shut. V11 Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, Lord, lord, let us in! V12 But he answered, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. V13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour.
Do ye have oil in your lamp? Do ye live by what ye say/preach? Is the fire burning? The content of your heart, the attitude of your mind.
Jesus says. Fire I am come to cast upon the earth. Paul says in one place that he would have the fire already kindled. Jesus says in Rev. Whether we are cold or hot that He hates lukewarmness. That is, He can make something cold hot. He cannot do anything with something lukewarm.
Either we are like a pot that is on the stove and is constantly boiling or we are like a pot that has been pushed away from the stove. The water may bubble a little in such a pot for a while, but the water quickly becomes lukewarm and eventually cold. This is what happens when we remove ourselves from the stove of Jesus and are not in the fire in the fire of the Spirit. But instead choose to live in the desires of our own flesh against the Spirit.
Paul also says that we should not put out the fire. It is not God's fault if we are not burning in the Spirit and the fire of the Spirit no longer burns. It is the eros itself that has put out the fire by taking other teachings into our lives and starting to believe in something other than the Truth of the Gospel.
We often look back on the fire of the times of revivals and wonder why we are not always in the fire of this revival ourselves, and almost find ourselves lukewarm if not cold in the zeal to promote the Gospel for the salvation of all. The message is do not put out the fire, but strengthen what is left. We must allow ourselves to be strengthened individually and stop listening to a lot of theri but instead take God's Word, exactly as it is and live it out in faith in God and not in any man.
God wants us to be invisible, illuminated by His Spirit, so that all who see us can see and feel God in us. The kingdom of God is within you says Jesus.
When we do not see much of what they called in the old days the need for sin, it is because of ourselves. We are not all in place in our relationship with God. Someone really needs to start over and get milk again. And this happens in prayer and faith in God.
Think about how small a spark can light an entire forest. If we all had just a small spark, that spark could ignite entire cities, if that were the case.
The basic text in 1 Corinthians 14. 1 says that we should long for this, seek and chase after the prophetic gifts. And it is for the church, that is, for all born again Christians. We are all prophets as such, i.e. we should all live so intensely close to the Lord Jesus that we are burning in each of our service and gift.
However, if we do not have light on our personal task of service, we will work as lukewarm because we do not do what we are called to. Some think they are teachers and want to teach others about everything even though they have not been called to do so, they study theology, basic texts go to schools for years to become skilled in a field they are not called to do at all. Therefore, their words do not work and do not give life to the people.
Desire drives the work.
If God has not given us the desire to do what we do, we should consider whether it is him or ourselves who has sent us out into the work we think we are serving God in.
How can this be possible?
By faith all things are possible. By each of us bowing down to the law of God's word and surrendering ourselves totally to Him and letting Him determine what we should and should not do, regardless of what we are sent out into or out to, Jesus must be the entire driving force. We are not our own work, we are God's work, created in Christ to do the good and pleasing works of God, which God himself by his Spirit will drive us into.
Amen.
